INSPIRE TRUST IN TEAMS THROUGH BELIEF

Overview of Chapter 6: Emergence of Trust

Book: Start with why by Simon Sinek “How great leaders inspire everyone to take action”.

This book chapter is a must read for leaders who want to build a team and company with employees whose values are aligned to the vision and the value of trust.

Reader to Leader Series with Simon Sinek

Simon Sinek shares through the chapter what great companies do, here are a few:

  • They hire already motivated people and inspire them, rather than skilled people who need motivation.
  • They hire people with the “right culture fit”, which is attitude over skills.
  • They choose people with a sense of purpose and belonging because the WHY that they have changes their perspective and gives meaning to them every day.
  • They hire people “who believe what you believe” because a company is a culture and your beliefs control your results.

The leader’s role

A leader’s role is to create an environment of trust for great ideas to flourish.  Working together with a sense of purpose, creates camaraderie and then this camaraderie brings trust to the team and another role is to create a net of safety – practically and emotionally.

  • Create a sense of purpose and  a “why” to inspire, people are less likely to give up.
  • Create a sense of trust through the “why we do what we do”.
  • Hold all people accountable to the values in the consistent feedback.

Focus on trust

Interesting that the trust feeling is located in the limbic part of the brain, where the WHY is located.

The benefits of trust are:

  • People rely on each other; this creates value in the team.
  • People make courageous decisions rather than fear-based decisions.
  • Only when people trust will they take more risk for the company.

Questions:

  • Are the people in the team believers in the purpose of your organisation?
  • Is the purpose being communicated with the people in your organisation?

One Insight: Communicating the why you do what you do is not only inspiring, but it creates trust with people who believe what you believe. Finding people with similar beliefs and values (whether friends, employees, or business partners) will create an environment/culture to thrive.

One Move: Take a moment to write down, WHY you do what you do and secondly decide if this WHY is inspiring you.

I encourage you to read this book by the author Simon Sinek, read more and take action on this wisdom to grow yourself and your business.
